AutoAlign Quantum Dot Nanoswitches

Mass producible quantum dot design with tight tolerance manufacturing.

The Need

The differences between quantum dots and larger devices are the properties of quantum dots are closely related to size and shape. Until recently, quantum dots have suffered from at least one of the following issues the inability to create quantum dots in an exact location, to create quantum dots in exact sizes and shapes, and to make reliable electrical connections to the quantum dot. There is a need for fast, affordable, and repeatable techniques to manufacture quantum dots.

The Technology

Researchers at The Ohio State University, led by Dr. Paul Berger, have developed AutoAlign Quantum Dots to overcome the limitations of existing quantum dot structures. The novelty of AutoAlign Quantum Dots is related to the material configuration and method of production. These novel aspects allow the invention to take advantage of the phenomenon known as quantum mechanical tunneling.
