OH08-206-69 has good yield potential, excellent agronomic traits, good levels of resistance to major diseases of Ohio, and good quality.
OH08-206-69 is derived from the cross P.92226E2-5-3/OH751. Oh751 is a breeding line developed at OSU and was released by the NY experiment station as the variety Otsego. P.92226E2-5-3 is a breeding line from Purdue University with the pedigree: 86982/844030//86350/831800 (four breeding lines from Purdue). The cross was made in 2004 and F2 seed was obtained by Fall of 2004. The F2, F3, and F4 generations were grown in the field in 2005 (year of harvest), 2006, and 2007 seasons. The F2 and F3 generations were advanced by the bulk method. We harvested F4:5 (individual heads from F4 plants) in the summer of 2007. The F4:5 were grown during the 2007-2008 season and one F4:5 was bulked to form OH08-206-69. The OH08-206-69 was grown in the 2009 YR1 trials at one location, one rep.
Performance Summary
Appearance: OH08-206-69 has slightly above average height. It has tan chaff, no awns, and broad leaves.
Yield: OH08-206-69 has good yield potential. In Ohio trials it yields similar to Pioneer 25R47 and is greatly superior to the last OSU public releases Malabar and Bromfield. Its yield in Ohio is not as good as Pioneer 25R40 or OH09-207-68 and in the 2016 Ohio wheat performance trial it has average yield. Trials across the Midwest show that OH08-206-69 has above average yield compared to breeding lines from IN, IL, KY, and MO.
Agronomic traits: OH08-206-69 is relatively early maturing as it heads out 2 days early than the average variety in the 2016 OWPT. In OSU trials it is 2-3 days early heading than Pioneer 25R47, 25R40, and Malabar and 4 days earlier than Bromfield. Its below average heading date is also apparent in the genomic selection trial and 5 State trials.
OH08-206-69 is similar in height to Pioneer 25R47 and 25R40 but 2-3 inches shorter than Malabar, Bromfield, OH09-207-68, or OH07-263-3. OH08-206-69 is slightly above average in height in the 5 State trials. OH08-206-69 has excellent lodging resistance.
Test Weight: OH08-206-69 has average to below average TW. It is slightly better than 25R47 and Bromfield, but less than 25R40 and Malabar. It had slightly (-0.1 to -1.8) below average TW in the genomic selection trial, the OWPT and the 5 State trials.
Fusarium Head Blight: The FHB resistance of OH08-206-69 is very similar to that of the moderate resistant check Freedom for all FHB traits in the USWBSI FHB trials. In the three years of OSU FHB testing OH08-206-69 has had slightly better resistance than Freedom.
Other Diseases: In general, OH08-206-69 has good resistance to prevalent foliar diseases. Its rating for general foliar health (eg, resistance to all foliar diseases in a particular trial) in the misted FHB nurseries has been good (Table 7). Data from the OSU powdery mildew nursery shows that OH08-20669 has excellent PM resistance and this is supported by data from the 2015 Uniform Eastern and 5 State trials . It has moderate resistance to yellow (stripe) rust but appears susceptible to leaf rust. In the inoculated Stagonospora nursery, OH08-206-69 had better resistance than the resistant check and OH708 which has good resistance. This was also evident in the OSU breeding trials.
Quality: OH08-206-69 has above average quality as assessed by softness equivalent (SE) and flour yield (FY). Data from the 2015 Uniform Eastern trial shows OH08-206-69 to have excellent cookie diameter, good SE and FY. Date from the genomic selection project support this conclusion.
