OSU Canaan Fir; Abies balsamea var. phanerolepis; fir tree

Relatively frost resistant Canaan fir tree.

Canaan fir (Abies balsamea var phanerolepis) tree variety with a provenance of Canaan Valley, West Virginia. James Brown (Ohio State University, School of Environment and Natural Resources) sorted out the five natural seed sources (provenances) of this tree. The provenances are all found in West Virginia, hence the alternative common name of the tree is the West Virginia fir, or West Virginia balsam fir.

This Canaan fir is an economically grown alternative for Ohio Christmas tree growers to compete with Frasier firs (A. fraseri) grown in other states and trees don't produce new growth until late spring, to reduce frost damage.
